The wear resistance of bimetallic overlay plate depends on the concentration and structure of primary chromium carbides. During the cooling phase of open-arc weld overlay cladding, the excess carbon and chromium crystallize into hexagonal primary M7C3 carbides. These carbides have a hardness level of up to 1500 HV, providing a robust barrier against sliding and scraping abrasion.
By embedding these ultra-hard carbides in a tough, resilient iron-based matrix, the plate achieves dual-performance capabilities. The hard carbides resist aggressive abrasive media, while the mild steel backing absorbs impact stresses, preventing fracture during high-vibration operations. This combination is ideal for coal feeders, sand processing systems, and heavy bucket elevator chutes.

Traditional AR500 plates are hardened carbon steels that rely on heat treatment for wear resistance. CCO plates feature a composite structure: a mild steel base plate with a welded chromium carbide overlay. The primary chromium-rich carbides (M7C3) reach a hardness of up to 1500 HV. This structure offers superior sliding wear resistance, outlasting AR500 by up to 5 to 10 times in abrasive applications.
Relief cracks are normal and occur during the cooling phase of weld cladding. They are a sign of proper stress relief, preventing the plate from warping or cracking the structural backing during installation or service. These cracks do not compromise the plate's structural integrity or performance.
Yes. While the hard overlay layer cannot be easily machined, the carbon steel backing can be welded to support structures. The plate can be cut using plasma arc, water jet, or carbon arc gouging from the mild steel backing side. This makes field installation and replacement efficient.
